More coverage
I GUESS there are only two teams in the Oran Invitational, or at least you would think so from reading Friday's edition of the Southeast Missourian. In the entire article, the game between Malden and Advance had about four lines and no details. Guess what, guys? Malden is the No. 1 seed, not Bell City nor Scott County Central. You might want to give some attention to teams that are not constantly in the news for dealing with the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Is that too much to ask?
A new slogan
THOUGH I disagree, coffee shop philosophers already are saying the Southeast Missouri State men's basketball team's slogan should be changed from "Fast and Furious" to "Dazed and Confused."
Congrats to Eagles
I THINK the Oran Eagles played very well against Scott County Central in the first round of the Woodland Invitational. The only reason I see them getting defeated was due to getting tired. I think Oran could do some major damage this year. Good luck to you, boys.
Exciting to watch
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI State's win against California-Riverside in men's basketball on Nov. 24 was an entertaining game. It was great to see coach Scott Edgar implore the crowd to get behind his team, and it was even better to see the fans respond. The Redhawks may not have a winning record this year, but coach Edgar will make certain they are fun to watch.
A boost for soccer
MAJOR KUDOS to the Southeast women's soccer team that gave us something to cheer about recently. While the majority of the Southeast athletic department continues to be a laughingstock, coach Heather Nelson and her girls have been the most consistent among the true team sports, going 88-46-14 in the eight years of the program. This season, the team finally qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning the OVC tournament and gave Illinois all they could handle in their NCAA first-round game in St. Louis. No problems or NCAA investigations with our soccer team. Way to go, girls.
Overly optimistic?
I FOUND it interesting that Southeast football coach Tony Samuel said he expected the Redhawks to be a conference contender next year. Is he watching the same football team as the rest of us? We improved to 4-7 this season, but that was mainly due to an easier schedule. We're losing 20-some seniors, and we have no quality quarterback returning. Unless Samuel has several trump cards in his deck that are already on campus or that he's bringing in, I'm curious as to how he plans to contend next year with such an inexperienced team.
