REGARDING SOUTHEAST Missouri State athletics, under the current administration, there will be no change in leadership of the athletic department regardless of how bad things are and there will be no adequate funding for athletics no matter how far behind other Ohio Valley Conference schools Southeast is. With that given, let's at least support the coaches in place now. Give them a chance and don't blame them for other people's mistakes.
THIS IS for all area residents who are pretty sick and tired of what's going on with Southeast athletics. People last year expressed concern to athletic director Don Kaverman and to university president Kenneth Dobbins, and we were ignored. There is a problem and I think Kaverman needs to be personally held responsible. But that won't happen because Dobbins won't do anything. People have contacted Dobbins, they've contacted Kaverman. I suggest anybody that's unhappy, stop contacting Dobbins and Kaverman and now it's time to contact the Board of Regents. Call them and let them know exactly how you feel about the situation at Southeast Missouri State University. We need a change in our athletic department and it needs to start at the top.
Back when Central was playing 5A football, people said that Central should play more St. Louis schools that were closer in size. Now that they are, Central can't compete. Though I believe the program is headed in the wrong direction, in order to continue to attract student-athletes, Central needs to soften its schedule so that it can compete. Central can get beat just as easily by regional squads without having to travel to St. Louis to do it. They would have their hands full with Hayti and Fredericktown this season. Kids will not play in a program that gets pounded in all but its district games. By that point they're too beat up to care.
The Central Junior High School recently had a cross country team that was outstanding. The junior high team did not get any recognition from the media, which was a little disappointing. The team consisted of a boys team and a girls team. I know more about the boys team because my son was a member. The boys finished first in all but one competition including the SEMO Conference. My point is these kids may only be in junior high, but they worked very hard and were outstanding, and I applaud the entire boys and girls teams. It should also be recognized that the junior high cross country coach is a person who I heard was retired, volunteering his time to mentor and lead these kids. He ran every step with the kids and encouraged and praised their efforts. Thank you sir for volunteering and being a mentor for the kids.
