Saxony Lutheran sophomore Brandon Etzold finished second in the 1,600-meter run Friday at the MSHSAA Class 1 track meet at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo.

Etzold, an all-state cross country runner this past fall, covered the distance in a season-best time of 4 minutes, 40.24 seconds. He edged Chamois sophomore David Baker by three-tenths of a second.

Daniel Castle, a senior from St. Joseph Christian, won the race in 4:23.68.

"Brandon ran real well," Saxony Lutheran coach Larry Cleair said. "He ran second or third for the first three laps and just opened it up in the final 300 meters, and he gutted it out.

"We've got eight points for sure," Cleair added in reference to the team standings.

Saxony Lutheran was shut out last year. The Crusaders are tied for ninth among Class 1 boys teams after the opening day and in position to score more points. Jasper leads with 18.

Saxony junior Grant Lehmann had the fourth-best time in the 400 meters qualifying at 52.39 seconds and advanced to today's event final. Sophomore Alex Jauch qualified for the 300 hurdles final with the seventh-best time, 42.37. The 1,600-meter relay team of Lehmann, Etzold, Max Wieser and Trey Maevers posted the third-best qualifying time of 3:35.72, its best time of the year by four seconds.

"We're pretty happy, but I think they can run better," Cleair said.

The same foursome will take aim at the 3,200 relay title today.

Also Friday, the Scott City girls 3,200-meter relay team finished ninth in the Class 2 state competition. They turned in a time of 10:18.45, about five seconds slower than their district time.
