ERRORS SCORCH RED DEVILS IN LOSS

PORTAGEVILLE -- After his baseball team won its own eight-team Chaffee Tournament on Saturday, Red Devil coach Bruce Qualls expected a letdown of sorts Monday.

Committing seven errors in the field, the Red Devils validated Qualls' concerns.

Allowing nine unearned runs, Chaffee suffered just its second loss of the season, a 10-8 setback to Portageville.

"Coming off the big weekend, I looked for a big letdown mentally, but not that big physically," said Qualls, whose team fell to 8-2. "That was the worst we played all year. It was not pretty."

Portageville scored its only earned run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run that tied the score 1-1. The Bulldogs pushed across six runs in the second on four hits and four errors for a 7-1 lead. Chaffee used a pair of three-run innings to close the gap to 7-4 in the third and 10-8 in the sixth, but never caught the Bulldogs.

Matt Stroup suffered the loss, although just one of his 10 runs allowed were earned. In six innings he struck out 10, walked two and allowed eight hits.

Chaffee had nine hits as Stroup, Jason Harrell and Tommy Stidham had two apiece. Harrell also had two RBIs.

Oran 13, Sikeston 11

SIKESTON -- Adam Friga and Billy Loper each had four hits as Class 1A Oran notched a big win over 4A Sikeston. The Eagles improved to 8-3.

Travis Friga added two doubles for Oran and he also had three RBIs, as did Loper.

Dustin Glastetter got the win with four innings of strong relief, allowing two earned runs. With Sikeston having runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Glastetter fanned the final two batters to seal the victory.

De Soto 16, St. Vincent 8

DE SOTO -- De Soto scored 12 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and pulled away from St. Vincent. The Indians slipped to 5-5.

St. Vincent totaled eight hits; Justin Amschler was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Derek Kutz went 3 1/3 innings and suffered the loss.

Oak Ridge 10, Leopold 5

OAK RIDGE -- Brian Haupt pitched the last three innings and held Leopold to one run as Oak Ridge topped the Wildcats. Oak Ridge moved to 2-2.

Oak Ridge's Darren Hahs was 3-for-4, Eric Hobeck was 3-for-4 and Ben Favier went 2-for-3 with a home run.

BOYS GOLF

Cape Central 157, Farmington 184

Cape Central routed Farmington in a meet at Cape Girardeau Country Club. The Tigers improved to 6-3.

Central's Kent Phillips and Jeff Haycraft both shot a 3-over-par 38. Nick Harter shot a 39, Danny Groesbeck a 42.

Farmington's low score was a 39 by Adam Schweiss.

Perryville 166, Festus 195

PERRYVILLE -- Derek Cattoor and Jon Yancey each shot a 5-over 40 to lead Perryville past Festus at Perryville Country Club.

Also for the Pirates, Mike Riney shot a 42 and Ryan Besand and Jeff Hotop each shot a 44. Perryville improved to 6-3 and 5-2 in conference play.

SOFTBALL

Leopold 24, Oak Ridge 6

OAK RIDGE -- Sarah Gowen had two home runs -- including a grand slam -- and six RBIs as Leopold defeated Oak Ridge handily and improved to 3-2.

In addition, Kyla Horrell was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Jennifer Elfrink was 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Leopold had 16 hits. Lisa Peters got the win.

GIRLS SOCCER

Notre Dame 8, Farmington 0

Courtney Vickery had two goals and two assists as Notre Dame had its way with Farmington. The Lady Bulldogs are now 5-5-1.

Emily Worley added two goals and Laura Mittrucker had a goal and an assist. Jessica Lawrence, Katie Mehner and Lynne Obermiller each had a goal, Jill Edwards had three assists and Cyndi Cox had one assist.

Shannel Buelteman earned the shutout.

St. Vincent 4, Hillsboro 0

HILLSBORO -- Stephanie Schremp scored two goals as St. Vincent shut out Hillsboro.

Jessica Lakenan and Kaci Kutz had the other goals. Assists were by Carrie Strattman, Danielle Sutterer and Nicole Richardet.

Amie Leible got the shutout. St. Vincent improved to 4-0.
