SCOTT CITY -- David Enderle primarily played only defense on last year's outstanding Scott City High football team that made it to the Class 2A quarterfinals.
This season, Enderle is showing that he can be an offensive weapon for the Rams as well.
Enderle, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior, put on an impressive offensive show Monday night -- in addition to being his usual steady self on defense -- as the Rams rolled past visiting Caruthersville 42-7.
The game had originally been scheduled for Friday night, but a power outage to some of the lights at Scott City's field forced its postponement.
Scott City, despite something of a slow start, didn't seem very bothered by the delay. The Rams, now 5-1, won their fifth straight game. They've outscored the opposition 190-19 since a season-opening 30-0 loss at Malden.
"Our team is going pretty good right now," said the soft-spoken Enderle. "We want to finish 9-1."
Enderle, while playing running back, scored four touchdowns: on runs of 20, 28 and 29 yards, and on a dazzling 90-yard kickoff return to start the second half. He also had more than 10 tackles from his linebacker position.
"I just felt good today," he said with a smile. "It's my first year playing offense. I usually like defense, but it's nice to run the ball."
Enderle was quick to praise his offensive line and the Rams' defense.
"It wasn't just me. My line was opening up some big holes," he said. "And our defense is awesome."
Enderle finished with 136 yards rushing on just eight carries. He also had two other lengthy returns, putting him at nearly 300 combined yards.
Matt Underwood, Enderle's backfield mate, also had a big game with 133 yards on 17 carries. Underwood scored the Rams' other two touchdowns, on runs of 3 and 4 yards.
"With Enderle and Underwood, we've really got a good one-two punch," said Scott City first-year coach Roy Williams. "Enderle is unbelievable. They never wanted to use him on offense before."
Quarterback Scott Johnston added 101 yards passing as the Rams piled up 419 yards of total offense.
Caruthersville, which fell to 1-5, got virtually all of its offense from sophomore tailback Jamal Jackson, who rushed for 146 yards on 25 carries and scored the Tigers' lone touchdown on a 55-yard run.
The Tigers did not complete a pass and finished with 179 yards of offense.
Scott City broke on top 7-0 on Enderle's 20-yard run in the first quarter, but Caruthersville tied it on Jackson's 55-yard scamper later in the period. Enderle's 28-yard dash in the closing moments of the opening quarter put the Rams ahead for good at 14-7.
Underwood's 3-yard run late in the first half gave the Rams a 20-7 lead at the break.
It was all Scott City in the second half, beginning when Enderle took the opening kickoff, made several nifty cuts, broke some tackles and went 90 yards for the TD, making it 27-7.
The Rams tacked on two more third-quarter touchdowns, on Enderle's 29-yard dash and Underwood's 3-yard burst. Williams let his reserves play much of the final period.
"It took us a while to get going, but we've pretty much been a second-half ballclub," Williams said. "We always come back really strong in the second half."
