Fans of small school volleyball should be in for a treat today with the eight-team Scott City Volleyball Tournament kicking into gear at the high school and middle school. Area schools Scott City, Oran, Chaffee and Saxony Lutheran will be joined by Twin Rivers, Malden, Marquand and Campbell. Scott City and Oran have both had strong seasons so far and could be favorites to make it to the tournament finals...

Fans of small school volleyball should be in for a treat today with the eight-team Scott City Volleyball Tournament kicking into gear at the high school and middle school.

Area schools Scott City, Oran, Chaffee and Saxony Lutheran will be joined by Twin Rivers, Malden, Marquand and Campbell. Scott City and Oran have both had strong seasons so far and could be favorites to make it to the tournament finals.

Pool play matches will start at 8 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. Scott City, Saxony Lutheran, Twin Rivers and Malden make up Pool A, with Oran, Chaffee, Marquand and Campbell in Pool B. The championship is set for 5 p.m.

Cross country

Central and Kelly will be off to the Potosi Invitational today, with Central senior Jennifer Pancoast coming off a win at the Parkway West Invitational last weekend.

Central's girls have had strong performances all season, and likely will be one of the top teams at the meet.

Jackson, still trying to get healthy after a rash of early season injuries, will travel to the Marshall County (Ky.) Invitational. Rachel Schmidt and Ashley Meyr have turned in several solid performances for Jackson so far this season.

College notes

  • Notre Dame graduate Emily Worley, a junior at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is off to a strong start for the soccer team. Worley has seven assists and a goal through 13 games. UMSL is off to a 8-4-1 start.

Central graduate Marcus Klund recovered a fumble in Lindenwood's 26-20 win over Missouri Valley on Oct. 2. Klund, a sophomore defensive back, ranks eighth in the Heartland of America Conference with 42 tackles. Lindenwood is 5-0 this season and is ranked 11th in the nation among NAIA schools.
