Edmonds misses second game with post-concussion syndrome

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds, who has missed two games due to post-concussion syndrome, is hopeful of returning to the lineup as early as today.

"He actually felt better today and was actually talking about possibly playing tomorrow," trainer Barry Weinberg said after the Cardinals' 2-1 victory over the Reds on Thursday. "We just have to judge each day by his symptoms."

Edmonds underwent an MRI exam on Tuesday night and other medical tests on Wednesday. During Thursday's game he was examined by a neurologist as part of the team's ongoing search for answers.

Edmonds had a light workout earlier Thursday and reported no problems such as headaches, blurred vision and light-headedeness.

Edmonds had what was described as a slight concussion on June 21 when he crashed into the wall in Chicago trying to rob White Sox third baseman Joe Crede of a home run. Edmonds said he's had intermittent bouts of dizziness and blurred vision along with nausea since then, feelings that have intensified after a couple of diving attempts in the last week or so.

Mulder struggles in start

Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder gave up five runs in four innings Thursday in a rehab start for Class AAA Memphis. The two-time All-Star walked five and yielded seven hits -- including a two-run homer by Joaquin Arias. Only 50 of his 92 pitches were strikes, and he benefited from two runners being thrown out from the outfield.
