EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. — The East Prairie volleyball team scripted a remarkable comeback story last season, leaving behind a trail of victories that defied their previous struggles.

However, as the Lady Eagles step onto the court for a new season, the team must confront a new reality, the departure of many of their star athletes. Unfazed by the challenge, they stand united, ready to embody the spirit of the underdog, determined to exceed expectations once again.

“We are always looking for ways to improve and take our game to the next level,” said East Prairie coach Kelle Goodding. “We know we are often the underdog, but that keeps us fighting. They got a taste of victory last year and now these athletes are hungry for more wins. Coach Macie Tanksley and I keep reinforcing the idea of trusting your teammates and believing in our team’s ability to make it happen. If we keep putting in the work and we will reap the rewards.”

East Prairie does return a solid foundation of experience, as they welcome back three starters in seniors Jerzey Vinson, Lydia Valencia and Alison Miller.

Vinson’s exceptional versatility shines on the court, seamlessly transitioning between her roles as a setter and outside hitter. Last season, she showcased her offensive prowess by recording the third-highest number of kills (88) on the team. Additionally, her exceptional serving skills resulted in 48 aces, while her defensive abilities were highlighted by 284 digs. Vinson’s well-rounded game also featured 25 assists, emphasizing her playmaking on the court.

Valencia’s impact as a middle hitter is undeniable. With a commanding presence at the net, she unleashed her power, amassing an impressive tally of 74 kills. Her serves packed a punch, resulting in 67 aces, while her defensive skills were on display with 20 blocks and 125 digs. Valencia’s adaptability also shone through her ability to set up her teammates for success, contributing 54 assists.

Miller, the team’s libero, has outstanding defensive skills that were on full display as she led the team with 355 digs, consistently thwarting the opposition’s attacks. Her precise decision-making and selflessness were evident through her 17 assists, demonstrating her ability to contribute in all facets of the game.

The team’s backbone will be fortified by this talented group of seniors, including Kylee Gilliam, who brings her skills as an opposite hitter to the forefront. Alongside the seniors, sophomore middle hitter Sydney Aycock and freshman setter and outside hitter Olivia Hayes have demonstrated solid potential. Together, these players complete East Prairie’s starting lineup, forming a formidable unit ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead.

Completing the team roster, senior Abbie Sprinkles, and juniors Maryn Grissom and Brooklyn Irby bring their defensive expertise to the squad. Their presence adds valuable depth to the team.

Freshman middle Remi Cade is another player that has shown promising potential and has already earned a role on the varsity roster.

Goodding acknowledged the abundance of young talent on the junior varsity team, indicating a bright future for the program.

“We’re switching things up this year,” Goodding said. “We have a strategic plan in place to make the most of our setter’s hitting talents. We’ll be implementing a 6-2 formation, allowing our setters to not only facilitate the offense but also contribute as hitters."

The 6-2 formation offers teams greater flexibility, offensive options and strategic advantages, making it an appealing choice for teams looking to capitalize on the hitting talents of their setters.

“This innovative approach will add a new dimension to our game,” she concluded. “Keeping out opponents on their toes and maximizing our scoring opportunities. We’re ready to unleash a dynamic and unpredictable offense that will challenge and surprise our opponents.”
