The Doniphan Donettes softball team kicked off their spring season with a hot start, and with the work from behind the plate, they have snagged two wins.

In a matchup against the Malden Green Vave softball team, the Donettes scored six runs in the fifth inning, which helped them defeat Malden 8-2 on Friday.

The Donettes got on the board in the third inning after Kiernyn Bond singled, scoring two runs and from there, the Donettes would continue to connect with multiple hits.

Senior Kylie Hawkins earned the win for Doniphan from the mound. The pitcher surrendered four hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking three. Sarah Nealey took the loss for Malden. She gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out none and walking four.

The Donettes found their stride midway through the fifth inning as they saw an opening to land multiple hits to the outfield. Carsyn Hagood singled, scoring one run, Hawkins singled, scoring two runs, Micha Burton laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run, Kenzee Davis singled, scoring one run and Paige Wilson singled, scoring one run.

Bond, Wilson, Davis, Burton, Hawkins, and Hagood each drove in one run for the Donettes. Doniphan also had a solid defensive plan by turning two double plays in the game and didn’t commit a single error.

The Donettes continued its hot start from the first game and carried the same energy into their next matchup by traveling to New Madrid County Central to take on the Lady Eagles.

The Donettes didn’t waste any time picking up a quick lead over the Lady Eagles and coasted to a 16-0 win on Monday.

Hawkins was the spark the Donettes needed to snag their second win of the season. She drove in five runs on two hits. Hawkins hit a home run to left field in the first inning, scoring three runs, and singled in the first inning, scoring two.

Doniphan got the game rolling early with 11 runs in the first inning. Kiernyn Bond doubled, scoring two runs, Hawkins homered to left field, scoring three runs, an error scored one run, Kenna Kirby singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Dalila Watson drew a walk, scoring one run and Hawkins singled, scoring two runs.

The Donettes added to their early lead at the top of the second inning when Ava Monaghan doubled, scoring two runs. Carsyn Hagood grounded out, scoring one run, and a passed ball scored one run.

A single by Paige Wilson extended the Donettes’ lead to 16-0 in the top of the third inning to seal the victory.

Kenzee Davis earned the win for Doniphan as the pitcher. Davis gave up one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out five and walking two. Emma Howard took the loss for New Madrid County Central. She went one inning, surrendering one run (zero earned) on one hit, striking out none and walking one.

Wilson, Kirby, and Hawkins each collected two hits for the Donettes.
