The Unstoppable.
The nickname described the Madcap Medics' Todd Lumsden's performance and the doctors' domination in the latest renewal of the Doctor vs. Lawyer Basketball Showdown series.
Lumsden's double-double led the doctors to a 65-50 win against the Legal Eagles on Friday in the 12th annual charity event. The victory was the doctors' fourth in a row and 10th overall.
Lumsden said the nickname was not his idea and credited his teammates for his dominating performance, but his play backed up the claim. He controlled the boards and proved unguardable on offense, finishing with 22 points and 15 rebounds in his eighth appearance in the showdown. Terry Spence added 11 points for the doctors.
"They gave it to me when I got here," Lumsden said of the accurate moniker.
While Lumsden said his teammates' great passes led to easy baskets, Madcap Medics' coach Eric Morton pointed to Lumsden as the key.
"He can take the ball anytime he wants, he can score anytime he wants," Morton said. "He is by far the best player in the city over 35 years old. He is by far our best player, and he always plays."
Brandon Sanchez and Ian Page led the lawyers with 12 points apiece.
The two teams play in the game to raise money for the Community Counseling Center Foundation.
"It's good for the community," Lumsden said. "It goes to the Community Counseling Center, and that's why the guys do it."
Morton said: "Everybody always does a real good job, and I'm glad we raise money for the community. Last year we raised $12,000 to $15,000, and hopefully this year we will raise at least that much."
