District tourney to resume

Rain on Thursday caused postponement of both games.

After wrapping up a 10-8 victory over Cape Girardeau close to midnight on Wednesday, Jackson coach Mark Lewis was ready to get on the field again and grab a place in the District 14 American Legion tournament finals.

Unfortunately for Jackson, rain postponed play at Jackson's Legion Field on Thursday, pushing the two games scheduled for Thursday to today.

"I wanted to play," Lewis said. "When a tournament gets started you just want to play. I don't think the rain gives an advantage to anyone."

The postponement means there will be three games scheduled for today, with both spots in the finals to be determined. The finals are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Cape (17-25) will play Dunklin County (25-17) in an elimination game at 2 p.m. today, while Jackson (23-12) will face Sikeston (17-9) at 5 p.m. The winner of the Cape/Dunklin game will play the loser of the Jackson/Sikeston game at 8 p.m.

Sikeston is already assured a berth in next week's zone tournament as the host. Should Sikeston defeat Jackson today, the winner of the 8 p.m. game will also get a spot in the zone tournament.

Wednesday's meeting between Cape and Jackson, the sixth between the two teams this season, was delayed nearly an hour due to rain. The RE/MAX Achievers used four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to down Cape for the fifth time in six meetings.

Jackson starter Jason Meystedt pitched 8 2/3 innings for the win. Meystedt added two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Zach Brazer added two hits and three RBIs, and Brandon Cooper added two RBIs.

Kendal Deason led Cape with three hits, and Sean Bard added a three-run home run in the ninth which cut the lead to 10-8. Bard finished with two hits and four RBIs.

Cape put the tying run in the batters box before Brandon Gendron came on and earned a save by getting Kent Deason to ground out for the final out.
