Dexter Senior Babe Ruth defeated New Madrid 8-6 Sunday at Capaha Field to capture the Firecracker Classic.
Earlier in the day, Dexter defeated the host Cape Girardeau White Sox 18-8 in six innings to advance to the championship game.
New Madrid advanced with a 2-1 victory over Jackson Junior Legion.
The White Sox, who won their pool and finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, fell to 11-15 on the season with their semifinal loss to Dexter. In the loss, Cape pounded out 13 hits, including two apiece by Mike Sullivan, Matt Jones, Matt Brandt, Jamie Essner and Garrett Senciboy. Sullivan suffered the loss on the mound.
In its loss to New Madrid, Jackson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and nursed the slim edge for a good portion of the game. However New Madrid took the lead for good on a two-run triple in the fifth inning.
