Sikeston's Blake DeWitt was thrown right into the fire during his major league debut.

DeWitt, who parlayed strong spring training play and several injuries to make the Los Angeles Dodgers' opening-day roster, was their starting third baseman during Monday's season opener.

The 22-year-old DeWitt singled in his first big-league at-bat in the second inning and scored a run as the Dodgers beat the visiting San Francisco Giants 5-0.

DeWitt, batting eighth in the order, went 1-for-2 with two walks.

DeWitt, a 2004 Sikeston High School graduate, was drafted by Los Angeles with the 28th pick of the first round. He never had played at a level higher than Class AA before making the Dodgers' roster.
