JACKSON - Jackson High's baseball team totaled only four hits but the Indians took advantage of six walks and beat visiting Charleston 4-2 Monday.

The Indians improved to 2-1.

With the game tied at 2-2 after three innings, Jackson scored two in the fourth and held Charleston scoreless for the final four frames.

Jackson's Jason Goben earned the win. He went the distance, allowing no earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking one.

In the first inning, Jackson scored two runs as Josh Adams' double drove in Justin Gladish, who had walked, and Brock Friedrich's single scored Jarod Suedekum, who had also drawn a walk.

After Charleston tied the game with two runs in the third inning, Jackson scored two in the fourth on a pair of Charleston mistakes.

Zane McClard scored as Charleston's catcher's attempt to throw him out at third base on a steal attempt went into left field. Bert Hahs later scored on a wild pitch.

Adams went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gladish and McClard had Jackson's other hits.

The Indians will return to action today at rival Cape Central. Charleston also plays today, hosting Chaffee.

SOFTBALL

Kelly 8

Notre Dame 3

Kelly improved to 2-0 with a win at Notre Dame. It was Notre Dame's season opener.

Kim Riley pitched six innings and earned the win. She struck out three and walked none. The Lady Bulldogs' Jill Huber suffered the loss.

Six players accounted for Kelly's six hits. Natalie Robert and Pam Essner both connected for home runs and Riley had a double and two RBIs.

For Notre Dame, Bonnie Essner went 3-for-3.

Kelly returns to action today, hosting Oak Ridge. Notre Dame visits Chaffee Wednesday.

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City is now 2-0 after rolling past visiting St. Vincent Monday in a five-inning, run-rule game.

Dana Petitt pitched four innings to earn the victory.

The Lady Rams pounded out 16 hits, led by Tara Sanford with three. Lori Arnzen and Amy O'Brien both added two hits.

Scott City visits Oak Ridge Wednesday.

Chaffee 20

PATTON -- Chaffee opened its softball season Monday by routing host Meadow Heights in a game stopped after three innings.

Jamie Duncan was the winning pitcher. She allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four.

The Lady Red Devils' eight-hit attack was led by Brandi Foulk. She doubled, tripled and homered, good for three RBIs. Jennifer Siebert added two hits.

Chaffee scored 18 runs in the first inning and cruised from there.

The Lady Devils visit Charleston today.

BOYS GOLF

Jackson wins triangular

JACKSON -- Jackson won a triangular meet with Cape Central and Notre Dame Monday at Bent Creek Golf Course.

Jackson won the 18-hole meet by shooting 310 on the par-72 course. Central was second (334) and Notre Dame third (346).

Three golfers tied for medalist honors. Notre Dame's Dan Buerck and Jackson's Tyler Luebbers and Gabe Estes each shot 75.

Rounding out Jackson's top four, Clint Faries shot 79 and John Litzelfelner 81.

Central's top four were Dane McLaird (81), Brian Welker (84), Mike Oslund (84) and Dan Groesbeck (85).

For Notre Dame, Jonathan LeGrand and Matt Howard both shot 88 and Chris Koeper shot 95.

All three area teams will be back in action today. Central hosts Jackson and Clearwater at the Cape Girardeau Country Club while Notre Dame entertains Bloomfield and Portageville at Bent Creek.
