The Delta softball team captured the Class 1 District 1 championship on Friday in Neelyville, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth to beat Naylor 2-1.

The top-seeded Bobcats (12-7) received a two-hitter from freshman Kendra Burnett, who improved to 12-5. She walked one and struck out six.

Delta senior shortstop Shea Smith had an RBI triple in the first inning but also suffered a knee injury on the play.

Kaci Menz homered in the fifth for the winning run.

Delta will play on Wednesday in the Class 1 sectional round at Billings High School, just southwest of Springfield.

Class 3 District 1

Notre Dame's bid for a fourth straight final four appearance and first state title almost was derailed in the Bulldogs' first game of district play.

Erika Reinagel drove in Paris Burger with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift Notre Dame to a 2-1 semifinal victory. Reinagal had scored the game's first run in the first inning on Kristain Burger's triple.

Windsor's Nicole McCraw dueled with Miranda Schlosser (five innings, two hits, eight strikeouts, one earned run) and winner Beth Schnurbusch (13-0, two innings, no hits, no runs, two strikeouts).

Paris Burger had three hits. Reinagel and Kristain Burger each had two.

Paris Burger doubled with two outs in the seventh and moved to third on the passed ball before Reinagel's hit.

Notre Dame plays Festus at 10 a.m. today in Perryville.

GIRLS TENNIS Class 4 District 1

Central's doubles team of Sarah Ford and Lindsey Pingel, the top seed in the field, won two matches on the opening day of the district tournament at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park in St. Louis.

Ford and Pingel won 6-1, 6-0 against Cor Jesu's doubles entry and then won 6-0, 6-0 against Erinne Haff and Sarah Detring of Jackson.

Sophomore singles player Christen Edmonds won three matches to remain in the field. She beat Jenny Kremer of Mehlville 6-3, 6-4, then topped Katie Hasenmueller of Eureka 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, and beat Sarah Schaeffer of Cor Jesu 6-0, 6-0. Her reward is a match today against top-seeded Laura Richardson of Parkway South.

Kristen Ford lost her opening match, 6-2, 6-1 to Prya Gujarati of Poplar Bluff; and the doubles team of Carsen Bahn and Claire Segar lost a three-set match.

BOYS SOCCER Quincy Tournament

Central lost a 4-3 decision to O'Fallon (Ill.) Township in a game at the Quincy Tournament.

Zach Zaruba scored two goals in the loss for Central (7-7-2).

O'Fallon scored a goal 3 minutes into the contest and ended up scoring all four of its goals in the first half.

Matt Hester scored an unassisted goal for Central at the 5-minute mark, but O'Fallon answered 30 seconds later. Zaruba scored his first goal, assisted by Dustin Welker, 3 minutes later to tie the game at 2-2.

O'Fallon scored two goals late in the first half on headers off throw-ins.

Zaruba scored late in the game, assisted by Jared Roop.

VOLLEYBALL Oak Ridge 25 25 Marquand 18 17

Laura Meyer had four kills Friday to lead Oak Ridge in a home victory.

The Bluejays improved to 12-7.

JV -- Oak Ridge won 20-25, 25-18, 25-12.
