The Delta girls basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in Class 1 with an undefeated mark of 17-0.

The Bobcats' success this season has helped coach Randy White surpass the 400-win mark for his coaching career. White currently sits in 18th place all-time among girls basketball coaches according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association record book.

In 23 years of coaching split between Delta and Scott City, White has accumulated a career record of 405-204. Fellow area coach Jerry Grim sits two spots higher on the all-time wins list.

White is in his sixth season with the Bobcats. Delta has won six straight district titles and has made a pair of state final four appearances under White. Last season the Bobcats finished third in Class 1.

Hughes, Ponder and Proctor helped the Hawks earn a trip to the state final four this past season as Kelly shared third-place honors. Hughes was Kelly's primary pitcher, winning 19 games with more than 150 strikeouts. Offensively, Hughes also was the team-leader in RBIs and hit better than .400.

Ponder, a third-baseman, led the team in stolen bases and drove in more than 20 runs while hitting near .400. Proctor was the team's starting catcher, drove in more than 20 runs and hit better than .360.

Jefferson College won 49 games last year, captured its first Midwest Community College Athletic Conference title and finished ninth at the national tournament. Essner was second-team all-American as a freshman last season.

Rouse transfers

Former Jackson state wrestling champion Cody Rouse has transferred to Lindenwood University, the top-ranked NAIA wrestling program.

Rouse, who was an undefeated state-champion his senior year and all-state his final three seasons, wrestled for Missouri Baptist his freshman season and was a national qualifier.

College note

  • Scott City graduate Loren Groves inched her way up the Kansas State track and field record books recently with a toss of 67 feet, 10 1/4 inches. The throw put Groves in second all-time for the indoor weight throw. Groves has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA National meet. Her mark ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and fourth nationally.
