EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. — For the third consecutive season Delta will play for a Scott-Mississippi Conference Championship.

The Ladycats (16-2) will look to defend their crown after advancing to the title game with a 70-35 semifinal victory over Chaffee (11-6) on Monday, Jan. 23.

“We played hard,” said Delta coach David Heeb. “We’re battling through a lot of injuries right now, and our effort was off the charts.”

Addison Nichols and Jade Berry led the team with 23 and 22, respectively, and rose to the occasion under some difficult circumstances.

Delta finished the first quarter with a 21-2 advantage after its pressure and speed allowed the team to build an early cushion.

The teams were much more competitive in the second quarter. The Ladycats led 37-14 at halftime after Addison Nichols made a shot at the buzzer that was assisted by Olivia Wagoner.

“All of our unsung heroes are stepping up right now,” Heeb said. “We have been preaching that some others are going to have to step up, and the whole team is doing it. I’m proud of this whole unit because everybody is trying to do more.”

Chaffee had an impressive stretch to end the third quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points to narrow the lead to 45-27.

“Chaffee made a good run,” Heeb said. “We made one little tweak in our press and the kids did a great job. That’s basketball; the other team is only to make a run. It’s all about how you respond to it and I thought our kids did a great job.”

Delta finished the game strongly and inflicted a running clock in the final minutes.

The final score wasn’t nearly as lop-sided as the 97-21 whipping the Ladycats gave the Lady Devils to open the season.

“[Chaffee] has gotten a lot better since the beginning of the season,” Heeb said.

“Right we’re learning how to win when we’re not out our full octane offensively,” Heeb said. “Our rebounding and defense have gotten better because it has to be right now, and the experience some of these girls are gaining will pay dividends when we’re back to full strength. But right now, everybody has to chip away and find a way to make one or two more plays. If we add all that up, it’s enough to win.”
