DEERING — The Delta C-7 school district is currently seeking a new head boys basketball coach.

Delta C-7 principal/athletic director Bradley Sneed told the Delta Dunklin Democrat on Monday the position is vacant.

Josh Mathis, the previous head coach, is no longer with the district, Sneed reported.

The Chargers are coming off a 12-11 season, losing to Clarkton 48-46 in the Class 1 District 1 championship game. Delta had a notable five-game winning streak during the season, which included victories over Risco (67-66) and Southland (79-36).

Delta C-7 was 3-18 during the 2021-22 season.

Sneed said he hopes to have a candidate in time for next school board meeting slated for Thursday, Aug. 10.

What's more, Sneed said the person hired as basketball coach may also fill the role of head softball coach.

There are other coaching vacancies still to be filled among Bootheel school districts.

Campbell athletic director Steve Fowler reported the Camels are searching for a new head softball coach.

Fowler reported the plan is to have a candidate to bring before the school board at its next meeting slated for Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Campbell had a rough spring 2023 season, finishing with a 5-10 record.

The Camels opened Class 1 District 1 play with a 14-6 win over Cooter, but then lost 10-0 to nearby rival Holcomb, 10-0 in the semifinals.

Senath-Hornersville athletic director Chris McClain said the Lions will field a boys golf team next spring; however, the district is still seeking a coach.
