NAPLES, Fla. -- John Daly and partner Frank Lickliter shot a 13-under-par 59 Saturday to take a one-shot lead over defending champions Brad Faxon and Scott McCarron after two rounds in the Franklin Templeton Shootout.
The 12 two-man teams of PGA Tour players competed in a best-ball format Saturday in the $2 million tournament hosted by Greg Norman. Faxon and McCarron had a one-shot lead after Friday's first round, played in modified alternate shot. Sunday's final round is played as a scramble.
Daly and Lickliter's round was two shots off the tournament record for best ball, set by Craig Stadler and Lanny Wadkins in 1996.
Lickliter made birdies on the first four holes, and Daly birdied the next two. Both players birdied Nos. 6 and 7, Lickliter had one on No. 8, and Daly's on No. 9 gave them an 8-under 28. They added five birdies on the back nine.
Dunlop Phoenix
MIYAZAKI, Japan -- British Open champion David Duval overcame a late double bogey and shot a 3-under 68 to take a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the Dunlop Phoenix.
Duval hit a tree root and broke his 7-iron on an approach shot to the par-4 14th, and carded a double-bogey six on the hole.
Duval is at 13-under 200, three shots ahead of American Jerry Kelly, who shot a 4-under 67 at Phoenix Country Club. Japan's Katsunori Kuwabara (67) and Taichi Teshima (69) were tied for third at 204.
Senior Slam
ST. AUGUSTINE. Fla. -- Allen Doyle, the Senior PGA Tour's leading money-winner, shot a 5-under-par 67 Saturday to take a three-stroke lead in the Senior Slam.
Doyle birdied three of the last five holes. Tom Watson rolled in a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and finished with a 70.
Doug Tewell was another shot back after three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine, while Bruce Fleisher missed only one fairway and two greens but settled for 18 pars.
The 36-hole tournament features the year's Senior major championship winners, with $600,000 in prize money.
Doyle won the Ford Senior Players, Tewell won The Tradition, Fleisher the U.S. Senior Open, and Watson the Senior PGA.
The players had some difficulty scoring on the 6,911-yard course with wide fairways and large greens. They combined to make only two birdies through 10 holes, but Doyle moved in front with four birdie putts on the back nine, all from 8 feet or less.
