Southeast Missouri State University gymnast Aaron Craig has been honored as a recipient of a 1998 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
The award winners were released in a recent edition of `Black Issues in Higher Education' and Craig was one of only three women gymnasts from across the entire nation to be honored.
`Black Issues in Higher Education' established the Sports Scholars Award six years ago to honor black undergraduate students who exemplify the standards set by Ashe.
Craig, a junior from Seneca, S.C., served as co-captain of the 1998 Southeast gymnastics team. She bounced back from injuries to perform especially well late in the season, when she placed third in the all-around competition at the Midwest Independent Championships.
Craig has also been highly successful in the classroom, posting a 3.48 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 for the 1997 fall term) while working on a degree in sports medicine.
In addition, Craig is a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Board at Southeast and she assists in presentations of drug awareness programs at local elementary schools.
