Cook wins two horseshoe events

Lachelle Cook picked up a pair of victories last weekend in the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association tournaments.

Cook teamed with Jake Kluesner on Aug. 26 to top a 17-team field at the Oran J.C. Fall Festival.

Rose Kern and Danny Williams finished second, while Darrel Vandeven and Patsy Tinkhoff finished third.

On Aug. 27, Cook and Melody Williams won the event at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson. The tournament drew 19 teams.

Dennis McMillan and Cody Dirnberger finished second, and the team of Bob Burnett and Jake Kluesner finished third.

The circuit was scheduled to compete Saturday at Benton Neighbor Day.

Williams medalist in Chip A Ways

Linda Williams was the medalist in Tuesday's action for the J.C. Chip A Ways ladies golf at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Bea Majek won the B flight.

Polly Bess, Deanna Peterman and Margie Kurre tied for low putts.

Cochrane, Brey beat the pro at Cape CC

Sarah Cochrane and Judi Brey were winners Tuesday in the Cape Girardeau Country Club Ladies Day golf action.

The play of the day was "beat the pro."

Three golfers tied the pro: Jean Mabrey, Marlena Jones and Luanne Kiefner.

* In twilight golf on Aug. 30 at Cape Girardeau Country Club, the team of E.R. Fischer, Marcia Wagner and Joyce Kuntze won the scramble.

Kennedy begins competing in world meet

Zalma native Jill Kennedy, now a resident of Charlottesville, Va., will compete today in the shot put at the 2006 International Paralympics Committee Athletics World Championships in Assen, The Netherlands.

The meet begins today and concludes Sept. 10. The United States has a team of 34 athletes involved, while the track and field meet draws 1,500 athletes from 77 countries.

Kennedy, who competes in the dwarf-only competition is the world record-holder in the discus and the javelin. She won the national championships in the shot put and discus earlier this year.

Women's hunting clinic set for Oct. 8, Dec. 2

A "Missouri's Outdoor Women" Waterfowl Hunting Clinic is scheduled for Oct. 8 and Dec. 2 at Duck Creek Conservation Area.

The clinic will consist of a one-day training session on Oct. 8 and a one-day fully guided waterfowl hunt on Dec. 2.

All applicants must be at least 16 years of age and will be required to purchase the appropriate hunting permits.

A $25 pre-registration fee must be included with applications, and the payment will be returned to the participants at the training session on Oct. 8.

Applications and pre-registration fees should be sent to the Missouri Department of Conservation's Southeast Regional Office in Cape Girardeau by Sept. 22.

Any applicant who was born on or after Jan. 1, 1967 must complete a hunter education course in order to attend the event.

The number of participants will be limited.

Wheeler, Leonard post wins at Sikeston

Chad Wheeler of Jackson and David Leonard of Scott City won their respective classes at the Sikeston Drag Strip on Aug. 26.

Wheeler won the trophy class with a run of 9.341 seconds on a dial-in time of 9.30. He averaged 78.83 mph.

Leonard, who leads the series in points, won the pro class final against Mark Tesson of Fredericktown.

Leonard had a near-perfect reaction time of .509 of a second from the starting line. He finished with an elapsed time of 6.97 on a dial-in of 6.94. He averaged 92.74 mph.
