NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- An Ohio Valley Conference committee will study the league's uncertain football future as two members drop football scholarships and another moves up to Division 1-A.
During the OVC's winter meeting Sunday, OVC presidents appointed the committee after three schools expressed an interest in becoming football-playing members. The schools were not disclosed.
In December, Austin Peay decided to stop awarding football scholarships. Morehead State did the same in 1995. Middle Tennessee State's move to Division I-A will be effective in 1999 when its stadium is expanded.
Other members of the OVC include Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee State, Murray State and Tennessee-Martin.
OVC presidents granted Middle Tennessee State an extra year as a football-playing league member, giving them Austin Peay's former spot.
