Coaching staff has new duties, new faces

The Southeast Missouri State football program recently lost a third assistant from last season when Troy Dumas resigned.

Dumas, who joined Southeast's staff in 2008, had been coaching linebackers but was slated to coach safeties this season.

Former Southeast linebacker Nick Stauffer, who had been a defensive/special teams assistant, will take over coaching the safeties.

Former Southeast cornerback Salim Powell, who served as director of football operations last year, moves on to the field as a defensive assistant.

Ex-Southeast linebacker Marvin Anderson joins the staff to fill Powell's former position as director of football operations.

Previously leaving the program were offensive coordinator Vincent White, now an assistant at New Mexico, and defensive backs coach Kenny Wilhite, now an assistant at Central Arkansas.

Tim McGuire moved over from defensive coordinator to fill White's post at offensive coordinator. Brian Mohnsen joined the staff as defensive coordinator.

Brandon Valeria came on board to fill Wilhite's defensive backs position.

Scrimmage highlights

Southeast scored three touchdowns during Saturday's first spring scrimmage that lasted about an hour and concluded the opening week of spring practice.

Sophomore tailback Bryant Worts, who saw limited action at linebacker last year after being recruited as a running back, ran over two defenders during a 9-yard burst.

The other touchdowns were recorded by two returning squad members who did not see action last season.

Sophomore quarterback Derek Gibson, entering his third year in the program and battling for the backup spot behind all-conference senior Matt Scheible, scored on a 1-yard sneak.

Sophomore cornerback Bradley Montgomery returned an interception 52 yards.

Southeast coach Tony Samuel said he generally has been pleased with the first week of spring practice, which has featured five of the 15 sessions allowed by the NCAA.

"But we need a lot of work," Samuel said.

The Redhawks will have their second scrimmage at noon Saturday. Their final of three scrimmages allowed by the NCAA will be the April 30 spring game.
