The Saint Francis Medical Center's fall coaches clinic will have an added event this year: the only local certification session for the Missouri State High School Activities Association's new weight management program.
The second annual fall coaches clinic will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Saint Francis Health and Wellness Center, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road. The clinic is free and includes information about weight and resistance training, legal issues in sports, ankle injury prevention and management, and more.
One clinic participant will receive a scholarship for five athletes to train with the Frappier Acceleration Sports Training program.
The MSHSAA certified weight management assessor training session will be 3 to 6 p.m., and it will be the only such session offered in Southeast Missouri this fall. It also will be free, with Saint Francis picking up the $15 certification cost required by the state association.
It is required that one employee from every MSHSAA school with a wrestling program be certified to assess body-fat or that the school contact a certified assessor for wrestling weigh-ins. The MSHSAA program will determine a minimum weight class for each wrestler throughout the season based on a body-fat measurement of 7 percent for boys and 12 percent for girls. MSHSAA also is requiring monitoring of hydration for wrestlers this year as well as setting weekly weight loss limits.
