Oran senior Addie Kielhofner skipped the first few track practices during her freshman year but eventually decided to join the team.

"People tell me I'm fast," she recalled thinking at the time. "Maybe I should just try it."

She did and advanced to the sectional meet that season before making the state meet each of her final three years of high school. Kielhofner concluded her high school track and field career with a third-place time of 48.04 seconds in the 300 hurdles to lead the Eagles at Saturday's Class 1 state meet in Jefferson City, Missouri.

It was the highest individual finish ever for Kielhofner, who finished fifth in the event last year. She was happy to achieve a personal best finish but was seeded second and thought she might go higher.

"Yes and no at the same time," said Kielhofner when asked if she was pleased with her race. "Third place is better than all my other years. At the same time I still feel like I could have done better, but, you know, at the end of the day you're always trying to look for more improvement."

Kielhofner joined teammates Aubrianna Jones, Ashlynn McIntosh and Kaylen Glastetter and posted a seventh-place finish in the 800 relay with a time of 1 minute, 54.19 seconds.

Oran took second in that event last year, but Kielhofner and her teammates were happy to make the final against tough competition this year.

"We couldn't hardly compete as well as we could last year," she said in a phone interview. "We still made it through and we got a higher place than what we were seeded, which is awesome, we just couldn't push through it. ... In the sprinting the competition is so high."

Oran junior Toni Hency placed 12th in the shot put with a distance of 30 feet, 11 3/4 inches to round out the list of local athletes who competed at Dwight Reed Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University.

Kielhofner has seen significant change in the Eagles' team since she reluctantly joined more than four years ago.

"Our track team has become much larger," she said. "We've actually attracted more athletes. More people are wanting to get involved with it because we have shown them that it actually can be worth your time, so more people get interested. Before it was really look down upon.

"It still isn't the best sport considered at Oran, but it was really looked down [on] my freshman year. But as the years went on more and more people started joining and everybody wanted to do it. And we just started doing better and better. Coach [Max] Wieser really helped, I feel like, build the program, too, because he just knew what he was talking about and he just knew track so well. And that just made people better and made us better as a team."

Kielhorner said she was proud of being apart of the evolution.

"From the beginning when it wasn't so hot to the end -- I'm very proud," she said. "And I'm glad I did it because I almost didn't."

On the boys' side, Scott County Central senior Cameron Blissett tied Salisbury freshman Garrett Francis for eighth place in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches. Delta senior Alex Lashley finished 13th in the discus with a distance of 113 feet, 10 inches in his last throw as a Bobcat.
