Christmas Tournament: Scott City rolls in consolation bracket win over Delta

Scott City used its height advantage inside to coast to a 65-33 victory over Delta on Friday in a consolation quarterfinal of the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament.

Ryan Brock, a 6-foot-5 senior forward for the Rams, scored a game-high 29 points, and teammate Jonathan McFall added 21 as the Rams improved to 5-5.

Ninth-seeded Scott City jumped to a 22-2 lead after one period as Brock netted 10 points.

"We needed to come out and set the tone," Scott City coach Mark Dannenmueller said. "We did a good job of that today.

"We knew if we came out and played well, we had a good chance of moving along [in the bracket]."

It was obvious the Rams' game plan was to get the ball inside against the smaller, 16th-seeded Bobcats (0-10), and it worked to near-perfection.

"We tried stressing it [Thursday night in a 68-56 loss to Oran], but for some reason we didn't do it right off the bat," Dannenmueller said.

Brock had 16 points at halftime and 13 more in the third period as the Rams built a 58-21 lead heading into the final quarter.

"Our guards did a good job of throwing it in to the post," Dannenmueller said.

Delta coach Jimmy Johnson lamented his squad's slow start.

"They came out and established the tempo. We got off to a slow start," Johnson said. "We did some good things in the second half offensively. It's something to build on.
