Shawn Sherrell fired in a runner down the lane with 1.5 seconds left to lift Charleston to a 73-71 victory in a SEMO Conference battle with Notre Dame.

The loss was the first in conference play for Notre Dame, which fell to 17-4 overall and 4-1 in the league. The Bulldogs are ranked in the top 10 in the state Class 4 poll.

Class 3 power Charleston took a 26-10 lead after one period at home in the makeup game. The Bluejays maintained that 16-point lead at halftime.

Abe Dirnberger scored eight of his 10 points in the third period as Notre Dame whittled away at the lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Ryan Willen and Mark Himmelberg pulled the Bulldogs within 57-48 heading to the final period.

Notre Dame completed the comeback by tying the score at 65-65 on John Unterreiner's free throw with 2:52 to play.

The teams were deadlocked again at 71-71 with 22 seconds to play following two free throws by Willen, who led Notre Dame with 25 points. But that set up Charleston for the final possession and Sherrell's winning shot.

Himmelberg finished with 13 points, and Austin Greer also was in double figures for Notre Dame with 12.

Jamarcus Williams led Charleston (16-3, 4-1) with 20 points. Justin Clark added 15 points, all on 3-pointers.
