CHARLESTON -- The matchup area Class 3A high school basketball fans have waited for was set Friday. In the District 1 boys championship game at Charleston, the host Blue Jays, the top seed, beat No. 2 New Madrid County Central 59-48.

The win sets up a sectional game at Poplar Bluff H.S. Wednesday between Charleston, ranked No. 1 in 3A, and Perryville, the No. 8-ranked team. Charleston is 25-3 and Perryville is 27-2.

Charleston got 20 points from LaRico Coleman, a junior guard, and 19 from Rashad Oliver, a senior center. Ed Farr had 19 for New Madrid.

The Blue Jays led 15-12 after one quarter and 32-24 at the break. New Madrid was outscored 27-24 in the second half.

"We rebounded well and played good defense," said Charleston coach Bobby Spencer. "It's always tough to play New Madrid."

Charleston made 15 of 21 attempts from the free-throw line, while New Madrid attempted only nine and hit six.

In the girls championship game, Kennett got 38 points from Brandi Jackson and beat New Madrid 65-62 in overtime.

New Madrid outscored the Lady Indians 12-9 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, but was then outscored in the extra period 7-4.

Shayla Day had 26 points for New Madrid and Tamekia Tipler added 17. For Kennett, Marquetta Smith had 14 and Jamie Medlock added 11.

Delta 92, Scott County Central 80

DELTA -- Delta held Scott County Central to 26 second-half points and closed its regular season with a victory.

Scott County Central scored 29 points in the first quarter and added 25 in the second for a 54-45 halftime lead.

"Our defense wasn't real good in the first half and we talked about it at halftime," said Delta coach Nate Crowden. "We did a better job in the second half."

Eric Canady scored a game-high 31 points before fouling out.

Delta received 20-point-plus performances from Sammy Below (27), Garrett DeBrock (26) and Jeremiah Cook (23). DeBrock, a junior, went over the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Delta (16-10) will open Class 1A district play Monday with an 8:30 game against Oran.

Advance 61, Leopold 52

ADVANCE -- Matt DeJournett had 21 points as Advance (15-10) closed its regular season with a win at home against Leopold.

For Advance, Matt Welch added 11 points. Leopold's Calvin Horrell had 20 points and Derek Broshuis added 14.

Advance, the third seed in the Class 1A, District 2 tournament at Oran, will play its opening round game Monday against No. 6 Bell City.

Leopold is the fifth seed in the Class 1A, District 3 tournament at Meadow Heights. Leopold will play No. 4 Marquand Monday.

St. Vincent 67, Meadow Heights 48

MEADOW HEIGHTS -- St. Vincent (10-14) concluded its regular season with a display from beyond the 3-point arc in its easy win on the road over Meadow Heights Friday.

The Indians hit 10 3-pointers. Jonathan Wengert scored 24 points and Chad Winkler had 12 points and eight assists. For Meadow Heights, Kevin Weaver had 20 points and Avery Ennis added 12.

St. Vincent, the fifth seed, will play its opening-round Class 2A, District 3 game Monday at Crystal City against Valley-Caledonia, seeded fourth.

Meadow Heights is the host of the Class 1A, District 3 tournament. Meadow Heights, eighth seed, will play No. 1 Lesterville on Monday.
