NEW HAVEN, Mo. — The Charleston boys sprinted and jumped to the top of the leaderboard at the MSHSAA Class 2, Sectional 1 Track and Field Meet at New Haven High School on Saturday, May 13.

The Bluejays finished atop the boys’ division with a team score of 86.

“The boys came through and performed at a top level. Breaking the school record in the 400 relay,” said Charleston coach Justin Hutchings. “We came out on top of the boy sectional going into state. Right now they are focused and ready to perform this weekend.”

DJ Williams not only won the 200 and 400-meter runs, but he also set new meet records in those events with times of 22.49 and 50.06 seconds, respectively.

Williams was followed closely by a couple of teammates in each event. Zecobyion Ewing was third in the 200 with a time of 22.70 and Kamirion Wiley was second in the 400 with a time of 50.08.

Trey Stanback won the high jump and tied the meet record after clearing 6 feet, 2.75 inches. He was also fourth in the triple jump after leaping 40-5.5.

Zachyran Thomas won the long jump with a leap of 20-10.75, and the 400 and 800 relay teams also won and set new meet records.

The 400 relay team of Ewing, Bernard Betts, Stanback and Williams won in 43.11 and the 800 relay team of Ewing, Betts, Wiley and Williams won in 1:30.45.

Malden won the girls’ division with a team score of 73.50, while the Lady Bluejays finished 16th with 21 points.

Claire Nichols was second in the javelin with a toss of 35.07, and Treasure Kimble was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.04.

Charleston’s 400 relay team of D’Nyia Turner, Zion Jones, Daniyah Thomas and Kimble was second with a time of 51.56.

“I thought my girls did an outstanding job taking second in the 400 relay since they were seeded fourth,” Hutchings said. “I thought [Kimble] did an amazing job in her 300 hurdles with a new personal record. [Nichols] came through and threw consistently to qualify for javelin. Will be looking forward to her throwing her best this weekend.”

Charleston state qualifiers will compete in the MSHSAA Track and Field Championships beginning May 19 at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City, Missouri.
