Charleston baseball upends Central 5-4

Michael Minner had a triumphant return to his alma mater as the Charleston baseball coach picked up a huge win for his program.

Charleston stunned host Cape Girardeau Central 5-4 on Monday, rallying with two runs in the seventh inning.

The Bluejays improved to 14-8 under Minner, a 1998 Central graduate who is in his second season as Charleston's head coach.

Central fell to 10-14 as the Tigers had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Charleston, trailing 4-2 at one point, was behind 4-3 entering its final chance in the top of the seventh.

The Bluejays loaded the bases with one out. Colin Gilooly then delivered a two-run double to put Charleston on top.

Sophomore pitcher James Miller finished off a complete game by retiring the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh, including two strikeouts.

Miller allowed five hits.

Charleston had nine hits off Central ace Garrett Stevens.

Gilooly paced the Bluejays with three hits. Stevens had two hits for Central.

Mark Freed tossed a one-hitter to lead the Braves past the Bobcats.

Freed also doubled at the plate in the win.

Cody Naramore took the loss for the Bobcats.

Bobbi Jo Schlick took a pass from Kasey Crowden to help the Indians improve to 15-2.

Seckman 4, Perryville 3

The Pirates refused to wilt, even when down 3-0 at halftime.

Perryville roared back to force overtime, but Seckman found the back of the net again to avoid the collapse.

Becca Hanquist, Kendra Schilli and Alicia Kueker each scored in the loss, while Ava Johnson, Nicole Gremaud and Schilli each had an assist.

SOFTBALL Delta 30, Scott County Central 0

Delta's Jodi Menz went 5-for-5 with seven RBIs, while Kendra Burnett was 4-for-4 with two home runs and a triple in a three-inning home rout.

Amanda Seabaugh also was 5-for-5 for Delta (8-2), which had 31 hits.

Taylor Keys pitched two hitless innings, while Ashley Glaus closed out Scott County with a hitless inning.

TRACK MCSAA spring festival

Stephen Cohen and Emma Shell each won two titles for Eagle Ridge Christian at the MCSAA spring festival.

Cohen won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 54.5 seconds, and the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 7 inches. Cohen also placed second in the 800 in 2:09.55.

The Eagle Ridge boys also received second-place performances from Bill Shell in the 200 (23.96) and Ben Douglass in the long jump (17-7). Douglass also took third in the triple jump (34-8) as the Eagles placed third in the standings.

Shell won the 100 in 12.61 and the 200 in 26.11. Abby Cohen added a first in the 100 hurdles (19.3) and a second in the discus (79-8 3/4). The Eagle Ridge girls placed fifth.
