The Chaffee football team ended well over a decade's worth of frustration against Hayti in resounding fashion as the Red Devils remained undefeated.
And in the process Chaffee is 3-0 for the first time since 1969.
Visiting Chaffee posted its third straight lopsided win to open the season with a 47-20 romp in its SEMO Southern Conference opener.
Chaffee had lost the previous 14 meetings against Hayti, which fell to 0-3.
"That was a big win for us because it was a conference game, a district game, and we hadn't beaten Hayti in so long," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said.
Junior quarterback Peyton Montgomery had another big game as he figured into all six of Chaffee's touchdowns, passing for four and running for two.
Montgomery completed 15 of 28 passes for 199 yards. He threw for three two-point conversions, ran for another and kicked an extra point for good measure.
"He had a good game and I'm not sure we even threw the ball in the second half," Vickery said.
That's because Chaffee had things well in hand by that time, leading 40-6 at the break. It was 32-6 after the first quarter.
"We jumped on 'em pretty good early," Vickery said.
Senior Devon Yahn caught a 9-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter. Peyton hit his older brother, senior Charlie Montgomery, with a two-point conversion pass and the Red Devils never looked back.
Chaffee scored three more first-quarter touchdowns. Yahn caught a 32-yarder, Charlie Montgomery a 20-yarder and Peyton scored on a 1-yard run.
The Red Devils were successful on two-point conversions after all three of those scores. Layton Tenkhoff caught a pass, Peyton ran in and Yahn ran in.
Tenkhoff hauled in a 40-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and also caught the conversion pass as Chaffee went to the locker room ahead 40-6.
Chaffee's final touchdown was a 1-yard run by Peyton in the third quarter. Peyton booted the PAT.
Senior Jimmy Golden rushed for 67 yards on 22 carries. Sophomore Devon Nanney added 54 yards on just six attempts.
Charlie Montgomery caught five passes for 46 yards. Yahn had four receptions for 74 yards and Tenkhoff added four receptions for 62 yards.
The Red Devils had only a 376 to 337 advantage in yardage but Hayti got a good part of its total in the second half after the outcome had been decided.
Chaffee limited the Indians to just 58 yards rushing.
"We still have to clean up a bunch of stuff but at times we're playing real well offensively and defensively," Vickery said.
Chaffee visits Portageville next week.
