ST. LOUIS -- Chaffee's Medicap Pharmacy Senior American Legion advanced out of pool play and into the semifinals of the Anheuser-Busch Fourth of July Tournament by claiming three victories.
On Saturday, Chaffee (20-8) disposed of Higginsville, Mo., 10-6 and later knocked off De Soto, Mo., 16-1 in five innings.
Chaffee defeated St. Peters, Mo., 9-0 in five innings Friday night.
Against Higginsville, Matt Stroup picked up the win in 2 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out four and allowed two hits. Chaffee was trailing 6-4 when he came in. G.P. Glueck started and went 3 1/3 innings. He issued five hits and three walks while striking out six. Adam Friga pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, striking out one and allowing two hits.
Andrew DePeder had three hits, while Perry Rice and Justin Simpher both had two.
Against De Soto, Scott Eftink gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out five.
DePeder, Stroup, Simpher and Todd Friend all had two hits. Friend and Jon Heuring both hit solo homers.
Chaffee will take on Raytown (Independence, Mo.) today in a semifinal game. The winner will play the winner of Dunklin County and Anheuser-Busch.
Cape JR. Legion sweeps
CHARLESTON, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Best Mortgage Junior American Legion baseball team scored 31 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Charleston Saturday.
Cape won the first game 16-6 and won the second game 15-3.
Jason Gibson picked up the win in the first game, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two.
Seth Hudson and Chris Daniel had three hits each, while Dustin Tatum, Patrick Slattery and Clay Schermann each had two.
In the second game that went just three innings, Jacob Yarbrough went the distance and allowed three runs on three hits and four walks. He struck out one.
Blake Urhann and John Thies had three hits each for Cape (36-9), while Wulfers, Slattery, Gibson and Colin Schermann had two apiece.
Firecracker Classic
Chaffee, the Cape Yankees, Dexter and Mayfield, Ky. have advanced to the semifinals of the Firecracker Classic Babe Ruth Tournament in Cape Girardeau after emerging from their respective pools.
Chaffee will take on the Yankees today at 1 p.m. at Capaha Field, while Dexter will face the Mayfield winner for the right to play in the championship game at Capaha Field immediately following the semifinal games.
