JONESBORO, Ark. -- Matt Stroup struck out 10 batters as Chaffee Legion won its opening game in the 20-team Pepsi Classic Thursday night, a 6-4 victory over Little Rock, Ark.
Stroup walked just one batter and allowed seven hits as Chaffee improved to 4-1.
Stroup and Andrew DePeder each had two hits in Chaffee's 10-hit attack.
Leading 3-2, Chaffee pushed across three runs in the sixth inning.
Chaffee continues pool play today with a 3:30 p.m. game against Blytheville, Ark.
Cape Legion sweeps Jackson
JACKSON, Mo. -- Jason Chavez picked up a pair of wins as Ford & Sons Cape Legion swept Jackson Legion in a doubleheader Thursday night.
In the opener, Chavez went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits, striking out eight and walking one. Lance Limbaugh suffered the loss for Jackson.
T.J. Erlacker had three hits and two RBIs for Cape Legion (3-4), which had eight hits overall.
Ford & Sons struck for four of its runs in the fourth inning and added one in the sixth. Jackson scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the second game, Chavez pitched 3 1-3 innings of relief to get the win.
Cape Legion's Tim Wencewicz had a pair of doubles and three RBIs while Shane Kistner added three hits.
Cape Jr. Legion sweeps Jackson
JACKSON, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau's Best Mortgage Junior Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader from Jackson Wednesday night, winning both games in its last at-bat.
Cape won the first game 6-3 in nine innings and won the second game 6-5.
John Thies pitched three innings of no-hit relief for the win. He fanned two and walked none.
Seth Hudson and Chris Conrad both had three hits, while Aaron Dohogne and Josh Ford had two hits apiece.
Conrad and Hudson both had RBI hits in the ninth.
In the second game, Cape -- which trailed 4-0 after the first inning -- pulled off a bases-loaded double play to end the game.
Matt Wulfers went six innings to claim the win. He allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six.
Jacob Yarbrough got the save and Josh Ford went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.
Cape Senior Babe Ruth splits
Cape Senior Babe Ruth avenged a 2-1 opening loss with a 11-0, five-inning victory over Chaffee in a doubleheader played at Capaha Field.
The two teams combined for just five hits in the opener.
Losing pitcher Tim Davis allowed just two hits, walked six and struck out eight.
James Powell had two of Cape's three hits.
In the nightcap, Powell picked up the win on the mound, allowing just two hits, striking out nine and walking six.
Ricky Renfroe, Brennan Gibson and Adam Ralls each had two hits for Cape (5-1).
