CHAFFEE, Mo. -- It may not have been a thing of beauty, but it was a big win for Chaffee over SEMO South Conference foe Portageville.
The Red Devils (2-2) picked up a 19-0 win over winless Portageville (0-4) at Chaffee Friday night.
The game, marred by miscues on both sides of the ball, included two big plays by Chaffee that spelled the difference.
"Basically, it was ugly at times but it's a win and the first time we've had a shutout in a long, long time," said Chaffee coach Allan Horrell.
After a scoreless first quarter, Chaffee's G. P. Glueck broke a tackle and went 39 yards down the left sideline for a score. The conversion attempt failed and Chaffee led 6-0.
The score remained unchanged through the remainder of the second and third quarters. Portageville was able to move the ball, but self-destructed when it got close to the red zone. Interceptions, fumbles, dropped passes and penalties haunted the Bulldogs all night.
Chaffee was not immune to mistakes either, dropping several passes -- one for a touchdown -- and a couple of interception chances. The Red Devils were still able to pick off three of Portageville's passes.
In the fourth quarter, with excellent field position at its own 48-yard line, Chaffee drove down the field and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Travis Hanback. A key play in the drive was a 21-yard pass completion from Hanback to Jeremy Lynn that put the ball on the Portageville 4-yard line. Again, the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 12-0.
With 4:37 to go in the fourth after stopping another Bulldog drive deep in their own territory, the Red Devils put the game away. Wide receiver Lynn took the ball on a reverse and won a footrace with two Portageville defenders for an 81-yard touchdown scamper. The extra-point kick was good to account for the final margin.
Glueck led the Red Devil rushing attack with 118 yards on 25 carries. He had 108 in the first half. Because of cramps suffered by starting fullback Shawn Powderly, Glueck was moved to fullback for most of the second half with tailback Jeremy Hahn getting most of the carries. Hahn responded with 40 yards on 10 carries.
