STEELE -- Chaffee High's baseball team accomplished something Tuesday that no other Missouri squad has been able to do this season -- beat South Pemiscot.

The Red Devils scored five runs in the top of the first inning and held on for a huge 7-6 road victory over a team ranked among the state's best in Class 2A.

Chaffee improved its record to 14-4 while South Pemiscot fell to 17-4, its other three losses coming against Tennessee squads.

"We have to feel real good about this one," said Chaffee coach Brian Horrell. "I'd heard a lot of good things about them coming down here and they do have an excellent team. It's a great win for us."

According to Horrell, the Red Devils set the tone for the game right from the start as they sent 10 men to the plate in their big first inning. The Bulldogs committed a couple of key errors that led to all five runs being unearned, but Chaffee received a huge hit from Zach Horman, who delivered a two-out, three-run double.

"We jumped on them early and that really gave us lot of confidence for the rest of the game," Horrell said.

South Pemiscot scored single runs in each of the first three innings to pull within 5-3. Chaffee made it 6-3 in the fourth as Travis Hanback doubled and scored on a single by Rusty Duncan.

After the Bulldogs pulled to within 6-5, the Red Devils added a big seventh-inning run that ultimately became the game-winner. Hanback struck out but reached first when the ball got away and he eventually came home on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs got a run in the bottom of the seventh but the Red Devils were able to close out the victory.

Matt Stroup started on the mound for Chaffee and went three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and two hits while striking out three and walking four.

G.P. Glueck, who received credit for the win, pitched the next two innings, giving up two runs and two hits while fanning one and walking two.

Tommy Stidham earned a save as he hurled the final two innings, allowing one run and two hits. He fanned two and walked one.

Chaffee had nine hits, with every starting player getting one.

Notre Dame 9, St. Vincent 3

PERRYVILLE -- Notre Dame third baseman Wes Steele homered for the second straight day and had four RBIs as the Bulldogs pounded out 10 hits and won their fifth straight game.

In the past two days, Steele who is batting cleanup behind slugger Josh Eftink, who is often pitched around has gone 5-for-7 with two homers and eight RBIs.

"He's just been a monster," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett, whose squad is now 16-4. "Who do you pitch to? Josh is a great hitter, but right now I don't know. Wes is on fire."

Also against St. Vincent, Adam Seyer had two hits, including a home run, and Matt Bollinger added two hits.

Scott Eftink was the winning pitcher. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three. Brian Obermann got the save in 2 2/3 hitless innings.

Notre Dame scored at least one run in every inning but the second.

St. Vincent scored one run in the third and two in the fifth.

Tyler Wengert suffered the loss for St. Vincent, but Graviett was impressed with the sophomore.

"He threw well," Graviett said. "At times, he looked like he'd dominate us. He struck out Josh the first time he saw him. They're a good 1A team and they'll give Oran and Advance a run in that district."

Advance 11, Oak Ridge 0

ADVANCE -- After a loss to Woodland in which Advance committed five errors and had five passed balls, the Hornets took out their frustrations on Oak Ridge with a five-inning, run-rule romp.

Daniel Turner and Garrett Broshuis each had two hits for the Hornets, who improved to 12-5. Turner also had two RBIs

Adam Rainey hurled all five innings for the win. He fanned eight and walked one on a four-hit shutout.

Ben Fadler suffered the loss in going the distance for the Blue Jays (5-8). He allowed eight earned runs on eight hits and four walks, with three strikeouts.

Courtney Vickery netted two second-half goals to help Notre Dame rally from a 2-1 halftime deficit.

Vickery tied the game 2-2 23 minutes into the second half, scoring off a pass from Cyndi Cox. Emily Worley then put Notre Dame (6-15-1) ahead to stay just two minutes later when she deposited a pass from Holly Montgomery. Vickery iced the game as she scored off a pass from Tracy Kluesner.

Jackson's Ken Spradlin won both of the throwing events, winning the discus and the shot put.

Jennifer Love was a triple winner for the Jackson girls, placing first in the 100 meters and 100 and and 300 hurdles.

Heidi Jansen was a double winner, claiming both the shot put and discus. Her 39-2 toss in the shot was her season best.
