Josh Govreau was named the new head coach of the Chaffee boys basketball team Thursday night at Chaffee's school board meeting.
Govreau, who has served as the assistant basketball coach at Chaffee for the last three years, replaces Tyson Moyers, who recently stepped down after four years in the position.
"Tyson mentioned to me back in September that he thought this was going to be his last year," Govreau said. "So I was kind or preparing myself throughout the year, and I'm really looking forward to it. ... I'm excited. I've got a bunch of good kids to work with."
Govreau, a math teacher at Chaffee, is a 2005 graduate of Southeast Missouri State. Before working at Chaffee, he was an assistant for one year at Oran High School.
"I like to stress defense," Govreau said. "I switch my defense a lot. A lot of full-court pressing and stuff like that. As far as offense goes, a lot of different motions. Not a whole lot different from what Tyson did.
"We have one returning starter from this year, our point guard, Taimen Taylor. Then we have three other juniors who were coming off the bench this year. And then we have some pretty good sophomores from my JV team this year that I coached. Our JV was 14-11, and they all play really well together."
Moyers steps down
Moyers, 30, said he resigned for multiple reasons, including the amount of time involved in coaching.
"There weren't any major [reasons]," Moyers said. "There are just a lot of little things that have built up. There are some other things I'd like to pursue within the school. I'm not sure if people understand the amount of time that coaches do. ... It's a year-long deal.
"I just want to see what [not coaching] is like. I might very well get back into coaching in a couple years."
Moyers will remain in his positions as junior high social studies teacher and assistant track coach. He will be the junior high school basketball coach, which he said will be less time consuming and will place less emphasis on winning and losing.
Moyers led the Red Devils to an 11-12 record this past winter. He said it was the team's first double-digit win season in almost three decades. He is proud of helping the team surpass 10 wins and helping the players become more serious about basketball.
