CHAFFEE -- Chaffee High's football team equaled its win total of last season by opening the 1999 campaign with a 33-14 victory over Grandview Friday night.
"This is the first time Chaffee has been 1-0 for so long," said first-year Red Devils' head coach Allan Horrell. "It's a good feeling."
Tommy Stidham rushed for 159 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Red Devils. His TDs covered 40 and 38 yards.
Travis Hanback completed eight of 21 passes for 127 yards. He hit Nick Cook with a 20-yard TD pass and scored on a 1-yard sneak.
Blaine Swinford also scored for Chaffee, on a 65-yard interception return.
St. Vincent 27, Carlyle 14
CARLYLE, Ill. -- St. Vincent, second in the state in Class 1A last year, began the new season with a comeback victory.
The Indians trailed 14-3 at halftime and 14-6 after three quarters before they exploded for 21 fourth-period points.
Derek Kutz kicked field goals of 24 and 32 yards for St. Vincent.
In the fourth quarter, Jonathan Paulus threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Cory Strattman to make it 14-12 and Paulus hit Ryan Brown with a 35-yard go-ahead TD strike and Ryan Propst caught the conversion pass from Paulus. Paulus ran 64 yards for a TD to close out the scoring.
Paulus hit seven of 18 passes for 178 yards. He also rushed for 76 yards on nine carries.
Cairo 32, Elverado 0
CAIRO, Ill. -- Cairo picked up its first win of the season in lopsided fashion.
The Pilots (1-1 overall, 1-1 Black Diamond Conference) got 159 yards passing from Darius Wells, who threw touchdown passes of 45 yards to Jamie Holley and 17 yards to Byron Wright.
Wells also scored on a 20-yard run. Other touchdown runs were by Ronell Spearman from 9 yards and Brandon Harris from 4 yards.
