The Chaffee Red Devils' offense scored a lot of points on Friday, but it was defense that helped the team remain undefeated.

The Red Devils rolled to their eighth win of the season with a 56-22 victory over Jefferson on homecoming.

Jefferson, which dropped to 5-3, averaged 41.1 points per game before the loss.

"We knew it'd be a tough game coming in," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said. "They're a very high-powered offense and the key was just trying to get some stops, and once we were able to do that we were able to move the ball pretty good on them."

The Blue Jays took a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter before Chaffee answered with a 10-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Peyton Montgomery and two-point conversion.

Jefferson scored once more in the first quarter but was then held scoreless until less than two minutes remained in the game.

"Well, they were hurting us early in the game," Vickery said. "Their quarterback is a very good player and he would get on the perimeter. At halftime our defensive coaches made some adjustments, and we did a much better job the second half."

The key to Chaffee's adjustments was keeping the Blue Jays from the perimeter.

Chaffee held only a two-point lead after one quarter but scored 40 unanswered points over the second and third quarters to all but secure the victory.

Vickery noted that the offense's balance was what made it successful.

The Red Devils had 409 yards of total offense -- 267 rushing yards and 142 passing yards. Montgomery completed 9 of 13 pass attempts.

Chaffee had two 100-yard rushers. Charlie Montgomery gained 113 yards on nine carries while Jimmy Golden had 113 yards on 10 attempts. They each scored two touchdowns.

Chaffee will try to complete the second unbeaten regular season in school history and the first since 1956 when it travels to Charleston on Friday. The Red Devils finished undefeated at 9-0 in 1956 by defeating Charleston in Week 9.

"I'm just so proud of what they've done so far, and we've just got to keep things going," Vickery said.
