Chaffee boys basketball team defeats Kelly

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- With four scorers posting double-digit totals, the Chaffee Red Devils had little trouble putting visiting Kelly in the rearview mirror Friday night.

Led by a game-high 20 points from Peyton Montgomery, Chaffee pulled away to a 16-point halftime lead before rolling to a 76-45 win.

"It always makes me nervous playing a team that we have already played and beat," Red Devils' coach Josh Govreau said about the Hawks. "But playing at home we came out ready to play."

Chaffee scored 10 of the game's first 12 points to take an eight-point lead just three minutes into the game. Kelly was able to close within a couple baskets in the opening minute of the second frame, but it wasn't long after that the Red Devils went on another run. Montgomery had eight points in the period and helped lead Chaffee on a 14-3 run.

Montgomery's steal and layup helped the Red Devils push out to a 33-18 advantage with 1 minute, 29 seconds left in the half.

Chaffee took a 19-point advantage early in the third quarter before the Hawks were able to make their biggest push of the game. Gaven Ray fueled an 8-2 burst with three buckets as the Hawks closed the gap to 13 with 3:37 left in the frame.

It was all Red Devils from there. Chaffee held Kelly without a field goal the final 3:30 of the third.

The Hawks hit on 3 of 6 free throws during that span, but buckets from four different Red Devils had them up 54-34 to enter the fourth.

"We had been in situations a couple times before this year where we've been up (in double-digits), then came out and had a really terrible third quarter and let a team back in it," Govreau said. "I really challenged them at halftime just to make sure that we come out focused and do the things we've been talking about the last couple days."

The Red Devils took advantage of several Kelly turnovers in the fourth quarter.

"A couple times we broke down defensively and didn't do what we were suppose to be doing," Govreau said. "But for the most part, I'm pleased. When you hold a team to 45 points, I'm happy with that."

"We wanted to pound the ball inside, and I think we did that. Trevor Morehead got in foul trouble, but when he was in there, he controlled the paint, and that's what we wanted."

Morehead had 14 points, while Charlie Montgomery and Layton Tenkhoff added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Ray finished with a game-high 21 points for Kelly. Brent Forck was the only other Hawk in double-digits with 10.
