Perhaps no team in the area suffered more losses than the Chaffee boys basketball team, whose only returning starter, Trevor Morehead, tore his ACL during football season and won't be able to contribute.
Red Devils coach Josh Govreau knows his team has some work to do this season.
"We're looking to rebuild," said Govreau, who's entering his seventh season as Chaffee's coach. "We're young. We have a lot of juniors and sophomores, and a freshman that may play some minutes. It's going to be a process. We have a lot of holes to fill and a lot of talent that we've got to make up for, so it's a rebuilding year for us."
The Red Devils lost starters Charlie Montgomery, Layton Tenkhoff, Storm Estes and Jimmy Golden to graduation, as well as starter Peyton Montgomery, who transferred to Central.
"The good thing I've got to remind myself every day is pretty much everybody that I have now, we're going to have next year as well," Govreau said. "We're going to have some bumps along the road. They have to think that they have a lot of time to get better, and we've got to make sure we're getting better every day and learning. We're not giving up on this year, but we know we're taking it into next year as well."
Junior Jordan Wilburn averaged 3.1 points per game last season for Chaffee and will be asked to take on a much larger role this season.
"He did a very good job for us last year stepping in and playing a role," Govreau said. "He's kind of going to be one of our leaders and go-to guys, so he's going to have to step up and learn how to be more of a scorer and a leader rather than just being a role player like he did last year."
Regardless of his team's inexperience, Govreau said he's been pleased with his players' willingness to compete in practice.
"The first two weeks have been really fun," Govreau said. "... I have some good young kids that push these older guys. In the last couple of years, I've had a lot of talent on my varsity and not really any younger kids that could push them, so practices weren't as competitive as they are this year."
Chaffee will compete in a new district this season that includes newcomer and 17-time state champion Scott County Central.
"I would say the district we're in with Scott County, Bernie and South [Pemiscot] is going to be one of the toughest Class 2 districts around," Govreau said.
The Red Devils and Braves join Class 2 District 3, which previously included Bernie, Bloomfield, Campbell, Cooter, Holcomb and South Pemiscot.
"Bernie and Scott County are class teams every year," Govreau said. "You know they're going to put a good team on the floor, and Bloomfield's going to be a good team. South [Pemiscot] is going to be really athletic. I would say it's going to be a pretty loaded district when it comes to that time."
Chaffee finished last season with a 17-10 record, falling to Advance 77-67 in the semifinals of the district tournament.
Govreau understands the challenge of returning to last year's form and is simply asking his players to improve on a daily basis.
"I hate to put a number on the number of games we have to win, and then if we don't get there, we're unsuccessful," Govreau said. "With this young group, we're going to have our ups and downs. They've got to continue to get better every day, and then play our best basketball at the end of the year."
