Central's Pancoast leads area runners at Hancock Invitational

ST. LOUIS -- Jennifer Pancoast of Central placed eighth to lead local competitors in the Hancock Invitational, annually the biggest cross country meet in the state.

Pancoast, a sophomore, covered the 3.1-mile course at Jefferson Barracks in 20 minutes, three seconds to finish among the top 30 medalists.

Central, Notre Dame, Kelly and Oak Ridge all competed in the mega-meet.

Liberty High School of Liberty, Mo., won the boys' and girls' Class 3-4 races. Liberty's boys, led by defending Class 4 state champion Adam Perkins, finished with 28 points to beat St. Louis University High by 77 points. Perkins, who won the meet, led a pack of seven Liberty runners that finished in the top 14.

Liberty's girls had 72 points to edge Marquette by a point.

Central's JV boys finished fifth out of 22 teams.

In the Class 1-2 race, Notre Dame's Ryan Roggow placed fifth in 17:56 while teammate Sam Montgomery (28th) also medaled. Notre Dame finished fourth with 134 points. Megan Rosenquist (23rd) and Katie Essner (28th) medaled as the Notre Dame girls placed eighth with 185.

Herculaneum won the boys' and girls' races.

Central wins tournament

Central compiled a 2-0-1 record to capture first in the tournament.

A night after defeating the ninth-ranked team in the state, Central (8-4-1) came back from a 2-1 halftime deficit to tie Rolla, the 10th-ranked team. Heath Orr had a hat trick as the Tigers battled to a 3-3 draw.

Aaron Bornstein picked up two assists and Trey Willis had the other assist.

Central followed with a 4-0 win over Hannibal in the afternoon with Heath Orr leading the way with two goals.

Grant Hengst had a penalty kick goal two minutes into the game to get the scoring started. Drew Crist's late goal capped the scoring. Bryan Ross and Calen Wills added assists.

Notre Dame 2, Westminster 1

Notre Dame (5-3) needed overtime to take out St. Louis school Westminster at home Saturday.

Blake Urhahn scored both goals for the Bulldogs. John Market and Travis Siebert assisted.

Notre Dame JV (4-0-1) also won 2-1. Will Lindman and Frankie Ellis scored for Notre Dame. Frank Blasiney picked up an assist.

VOLLEYBALL

SMCS 16-15, New Salem 14-12

New Salem Baptist (5-4) dropped a tough match on the road Saturday afternoon in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

MacKenzie Jones led the way with eight service points. Sarah Jordan had two aces and six service points.

Perryville loses in semis

Perryville finished 2-2-1 in pool play and fell in the semifinals to St. Vincent 15-13, 15-2 at the Jackson Freshmen Tournament.

Stacey Manche had 22 points on the day to lead Perryville. Lindsey Lappe had 17 points and Jennifer Ponder added 15 points.

FOOTBALL

Central eighth-graders fall

North County handed Central a 34-6 loss Saturday in an eighth-grade football game.

Jonathan Evans scored the Tigers' touchdown on a fourth-quarter kickoff return.
