Central suffers tough loss at home

Alex Shell collected two hits, but it wasn't enough as Central fell to Sikeston 3-2 in an early season baseball showdown Wednesday.

Jared Green and Nick Allen drove in a run apiece with singles for the Tigers (2-5 overall, 1-2 in conference).

Tyler Brandt took the loss in relief. He struck out three and walked three in 2 2/3 innings. Zach Wilson started for Central, and he didn't allow a walk in four innings.

The game was played at Central, but Sikeston was the home team on the scoreboard.

The Bulldogs pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Brett Leimbach shot a 38 to earn meet medalist honors for the visiting Indians.

Rounding out the scoring for Jackson were Tanner Werner (42), Chris Hogan (49) and Todd Heuring (47).

GIRLS SOCCER Notre Dame 4, Poplar Bluff 1

Mindy Siebert scored two goals and added an assist as the Bulldogs improved to 2-0.

Notre Dame enjoyed a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Anna Wren also scored twice for Notre Dame, while Shelly Frank earned the win in goal.

The Bulldogs return to action Monday when they play Jackson.

The Notre Dame boys team scored 105 points to edge Jackson (93.5 points).

On the girls side, Jackson earned the win with 97 points, while Notre Dame took third (27).

Mark Zimmer won the 400 and 200 for the Bulldogs.

Jacob Bullinger took first in the shot put and discus for the Indians.

The Bulldogs won the 3,200 relay and 800 relay.

Notre Dame's Jill Schnurbusch set a school record by clearing 5-2 in the high jump.
