Central's softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-2 win Wednesday at Jackson.

Callie Hoffman rebounded from a tough loss against Hillsboro to pick up the victory. Hoffman allowed one earned run on three hits, with five strikeouts and five walks.

Central (1-3) jumped out ahead with four runs in the first on four hits. Susie Edwards had the big hit for Central with a two-run double. Edwards and Jami Dement led Central with two hits apiece.

Hannah Fowler took the loss for Jackson. Hannah Kohm had two of Jackson's three hits in the Indians' season opener.

Central's JV won 2-1.

Cross Country

Notre Dame placed second in both boys and girls at the Murphsyboro (Ill.) Invitational.

In its first meet of the season, Notre Dame had two runners in the top 20 in both boys and girls. Brooke Beussink was 11th and Casey Crawford finished 17th, as the girls finished with 94 points.

Greg Kanneberg led the boys in 11th, while Matt Pfau finished 18th. Notre Dame finished with 109 points.

Both Notre Dame junior varsity squads finished second.
