Amanda Nichols took matters into her own hands Thursday.

Nichols scored Central's lone run and picked up the win on the mound as the Tigers defeated Kelly 1-0 in a softball showdown.

Nichols singled in the second, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a fielder's choice and scored on a passed ball.

On the mound, Nichols was just as effective. She struck out six and didn't walk a batter to earn the victory.

Mia Russell collected two hits in the win.

Katee Moore doubled for Kelly.

Notre Dame SoftballFest

Oran will face host Notre Dame in the semifinals after both teams went 2-0 to open the tournament.

Notre Dame won its pool, defeating Park Hill and Chaffee in games that enacted the 10-run mercy rule.

Notre Dame (4-0) defeated Park Hills 11-1 in five innings, then rolled past Chaffee 19-1 in four innings behind a no-hitter by Danielle Dock.

Notre Dame out-hit its competition 27-2 in advancing to a 2 p.m. semifinal game Saturday against Oran, which won its pool with victories over Goreville, Ill., and Scott City.

The Bulldogs received a home run from Nikki Chambers in the win over Chaffee.

Brittany Schott and Lauren Reinagel each went 3-for-3 against Park Hill. Reinagel, the winning pitcher, also had a triple.

Callie Kielhofner picked up both wins for Oran (5-0), which beat Scott City 8-1 and defeated Goreville 6-3.

Jodi Urhahn homered for the Eagles against Scott City.

The Rams won their first game, 1-0 against Goreville. Macy Heisserer scored the game's lone run on Emily Essner's single.

Essner went 1-1 on the day, striking out six against Goreville and two against Oran.

Ty Williams scored three goals and added an assist as the Bulldogs earned the 5-0 victory over Marion (Ill.) in their own tournament.

Mark Himmelberg added two goals and an assist.

Ryan Bass made four saves for the shutout. He also added an assist.

In other action, Jackson beat Sikeston 1-0 and St. Pius X defeated Cape Central 3-2.

Festus tournament

Andrew Etzold scored four goals while Ben Courtois and Garrett Fritsche added two goals apiece as Saxony Lutheran beat Festus 11-1 to win the tournament.

Joe Buerck, Bryant Steffens, Mark Buerck, Ross Gage and Brent Rodewald each scored once for the Crusaders (3-0).

Max Weiser made three saves in the win.

Ashlea Soemo recorded seven kills and 15 digs to lead the Indians to victory.

Jill Rushin has three blocks and Chelsea Olson had 19 assists in the win.

Jackson improved to 1-1.

Makenzie Schirmer had 10 kills and Lindsay Martin added 18 digs as the Pirates lost on their home court.

Liz Martin had 13 blocks and Ashley Castleberry had 20 assists for Perryville (0-2).

Woodland tournament

Leopold will face host Woodland in the tournament championship after both teams earned wins Thursday.

Leopold knocked off Saxony Lutheran 25-11, 25-17.

Woodland (3-0) took care of Meadow Heights, 25-17, 14-25, 25-22. Lauren Johnson and Chelsea Morris each had four kills. Jessica Santi recorded five blocks and three kills for the Cardinals.

Zalma defeated Greenville 25-18, 26-28, 25-21 in the tournament's other game.

FOOTBALLCentral 14, Dexter 0

Austin Davis and James Poindexter both scored rushing touchdowns to lead the Tigers.

Wesley Smith caught the two-point conversion pass on the second touchdown for the final margin.

Kielon Moore intercepted a pass for the Tigers on defense.
