Central settles for 10th place at state golf championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Central entered the second day of the Class 4 state tournament in fourth place and just 12 shots out of the lead, but finished 10th Tuesday after turning in a score 23 shots higher than the previous day's at Rivercut Golf Course.

Central's Todd Obergoenner shot a 6-over par 78 Tuesday, after an even-par 72 the first day, and ended up tied for 11th overall. Obergoenner still made all-state, which went to the top 15 individuals.

Justin Bardgett, a junior from state champion Chaminade, and Tyler Hillis, a freshman from Poplar Bluff, which finished third, tied for medalist at 161.

Central shot 329 and finished with a two-day 635 total. Chaminade, the first-day leader, had a two-day total of 600 to beat Rockhurst by five strokes.

Obergoenner's teammates also saw their scores rise in the second round. Sophomore Blake Driskell carded an 83 to finish in a six-way tie for 36th, along with teammate Ty Gramling, who shot a 79.

Tyson Seabaugh turned in an 89 to tie for 101st, and Kirk Lohmann shot 90 to tie for 110th.

Blake McDowell, Jackson's lone representative, shot a 76, shaving 14 strokes off of Monday's round, to tie for 78th.

In Class 2, St. Vincent bettered its opening round by 12 strokes but still finished last in the field of 16 at Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course.

Freshman Zach Richardet turned in St. Vincent's best score of the day, a seven-over par 79, and tied for 86th. Team scores on Page 2B.
