The Central baseball team got its season off to successful start on a busy weekend.

Central won three of four games and finished second among nine squads in the Valle Catholic Tournament in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

The Tigers beat West County 7-1 and Jefferson 3-2 Friday, then knocked off host Valle 4-1 Saturday to reach the championship game where they fell to Chester, Ill., 6-3.

"It was a real good start for us. I was very pleased," Central coach Steve Williams said. "The big thing is we were able to get four games in the first weekend. Everybody got to pitch, everybody got at-bats."

One of Central's highlights was a complete-game pitching performance by Matt Chism during Saturday's win over Valle. He allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six over seven innings.

"I couldn't get him out of there," said a laughing Williams. "He did a great job."

Chase Hagerty and Kyle Thompson also recorded victories on the mound for the Tigers.

Hagerty allowed one hit and struck out five in four shutout innings against West County. Thompson allowed two hits and one run while striking out five in three innings against Jefferson.

Chase Eubank was also impressive with a four-inning save against Jefferson. He gave up one hit and one run.

"I feel like pitching is one of our strengths," Williams said.

Calvin Lovig had two hits against both West County and Valle. Thompson recorded two hits against Chester.
