Central rallies to win thriller

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Central's boys basketball team bounced back from a disappointing Farmington Tournament championship game and beat a strong Blytheville (Ark.) team 52-51 Tuesday night on a last-second shot by junior Eli Harris.

Harris, who scored a career-high 18 points against Hazelwood Central on Saturday, took a pass from Will Johnson and with time running out hit a bank shot to give the Tigers (3-1) the one-point win in the Sikeston Invitational.

"This is a huge win for our program," Central coach Derek McCord said. "Our guys battled hard for four quarters."

Both offenses struggled early with Blytheville (4-1) nursing a 23-22 halftime lead. The second half saw Blytheville pick up the pace and race out to a 14-point lead up 44-30. Scott Chestnutt kept the Tigers in the game with a strong third quarter and finished with 25 points, but Central still trailed 44-37 after three quarters.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Harris and Jake Knepp helped the Tigers pull the lead back to 46-45 with four minutes remaining. A Ryan Delph tip two minutes later gave the Tigers their first lead of the second half at 50-49, but a Central turnover followed by a Blytheville basket had the Tigers down one with 24 seconds remaining.

Harris' second basket of the game sealed the Tigers' second win at the Sikeston tournament over the past five years. The Tigers will play Poplar Bluff on Thursday.

Notre Dame clung to an early first-quarter lead but could not hold on in a road loss.

The Bulldogs (1-3) led 14-13 after the first quarter. Dexter came back with a 19-7 scoring edge in the second quarter for an 11-point halftime lead. The Bearcats were not threatened in the second half.

Bryce Willen finished with 18 for Notre Dame. John Eric Klein added 12 points.
