~ The five area grapplers fell short in their quest for medals.
The quest for all-state status ended for the area's five wrestlers, as all five were eliminated Friday on the second day of wrestling at the state meet at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Jackson junior Jamie Schumacher was the lone area wrestler to make it out of the first round unscathed, but he lost a 9-5 decision to Ryan Greco of Blue Springs at 145 pounds. In the second round of wrestlebacks Schumacher pinned Christian Wyatt of Jefferson City, but Schumacher fell 10-4 to Dominique Thornton of Hazelwood East in the third round of wrestlebacks.
Indians sophomore Blake Peiffer won his 215-pound second-round wrestleback by pinning Reggie Dilworth of McCluer North, but Peiffer was pinned in the third round by Jake McKinney of Jefferson City.
Jackson senior Will Perry was eliminated in his second-round wrestleback match, losing an 8-2 decision at 152 pounds to Sam Thielen.
In Class 3 action, Central senior Tyler Yeargain was eliminated in second-round wrestleback action. Yeargain, who finished sixth last year at the same 130-pound weight class in which he competed this year, was pinned by Ozark's Arik Coffel, a former Jackson wrestler.
Teammate Garrett New won a 10-6 decision over Dan Schreimann of Warrensburg in the second round of wrestlebacks at 152 pounds. New, a senior, missed out on a second state medal, though, as he fell 2-1 in the third round of wrestlebacks to Caleb Gibbens of Willard.
