Central girls win Potosi Inv.

POTOSI, Mo. -- The Cape Central girls won their third meet of the season Saturday as six Lady Tigers medaled at the Potosi Invitational.

Cape Central compiled just 52 points as it won by its widest margin of the season, finishing 50 points ahead of runner-up Festus. The Lady Tigers have also won the Cape Invitational and Anna-Jonesboro Invitational.

Kim Pancoast placed second overall in 20 minutes, 10 seconds on the 3-mile layout while her sister Jennifer (20:37) was three spots behind. Also contributing to the winning team score were Whitney Pingle (11th, 21:52), Rachel Sprigg (12th, 21:52) and Magin Patrick (22nd, 23:07).

Hannah Steffens (18th, 22:41) led Perryville's girls, 182 point, to a fifth-place finish.

Perryville's boys placed fourth with 120 points and Cape Central was sixth with 141 points. Potosi, with 159 points, topped the field.

Kent Hadler (17:17) paced Perryville with a fifth-place finish. Tim Chitwood (17:28) was 10th to lead Central.

Cape Central's eight-grade boys collected their third win of the season to finish the year undefeated.

Carbondale Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Adam Daughhetee placed seventh to lead Kelly to a third-place finish in the nine-team Carbondale Invitational.

Kelly finished with 64 points, placing behind Farmington (40) and Sparta (52).

Daughhetee clocked 18:31 over the 3.1-mile course.

Rounding out the Hawks team score: Adam Lofton (13th, 18:56), Ashley Hahn (15th, 19:02), Michael Glastetter (17th, 19:12), Lance Scheffer (21st, 19:29).

Kelly's Trey Simmons won the JV race, finishing in 14:45 on the 2.4-mile layout.

MARSHALL CO. (KY.) INVITATIONAL

BENTON, Ky. -- Ten of Kelly's 13 boys and two of its six girls posted personal records in the huge 5K race.

Jackson's 'A' boys took fourth overall and its 'A' girls took sixth.

SOFTBALL

CLASS 3A, DISTRICT 1

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Perryville captured its fourth straight district title with a 5-0 win over De Soto.

Amber Leible's three-run double in the third inning provided all the offense the Lady Pirates (15-13) needed behind the one-hit pitching of Amanda Roth.

Roth struck out nine with two walks in the complete-game performance.

Perryville won the rescheduled semifinal game earlier in the day, an 8-0 victory over Ste. Genevieve. The Lady Pirates broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning.

Kelly Kassel and Julia Heuring led the nine-hit Lady Pirate attack with two hits each.

Sara Lappe went the distance for the win, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Perryville will host the District 2 winner Wednesday at 4:30.

VOLLEYBALL

SCOTT CITY 15-9-8

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Oran knocked off the Lady Rams to take the Scott City tournament championship.

The Eagles (14-8-1) were led by Maria Eftink who had 12 kills, five blocks and four digs. Teresa Hodges provided 10 points, including three aces. Candice Duncan posted 11 assists.

Shana Wadlington had a team-high six kills for Scott City (11-10-1). Mindy Miller had three kills and 15 points

In the consolation match, Oak Ridge beat Twin Rivers 15-13, 8-15, 15-10.

SOCCER

CAPE CENTRAL WINS TWO

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central picked up one of its most impressive wins of the season, knocking off ninth-ranked Springfield-Glendale 1-0 at the Anheuser Busch Soccer Complex.

Heath Orr scored on an assist from Arthur Pilsner 16 minutes into the second half to account for the victory. Glendale, after defeating Notre Dame 1-0 earlier, fell to 13-1-1.

"They were a very physical team and it was a hard-fought win," Central coach Tom Doyle said. "And we earned it."

Earlier Saturday, the Tigers (17-3-1) knocked off Washington 6-2.

Central got two goals from Jon Mark Thompson and one each from Clint Hoffman, Pilsner, Chris Limbaugh and Bryan Ross. Cody Hill and Whit Lynn provided two assists, while Ross and Jeff McCowan had one each.

Notre Dame fell to 13-3-2 with its loss to Glendale.

"We had some chances to score and didn't," Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn said. "But it was a good game."

Notre Dame's junior varsity (6-3-3) tied Glendale 1-1. Jonathon Market scored the Bulldogs' goal.

CENTRAL 34, DE SOTO 0

DE SOTO, Mo. -- Running back Zeno Walker had a 40-yard touchdown run and a 10-yard interception return as the Tigers improved to 4-1.

Gabe Edwards had 86 yards and scored a touchdown. Mark Welker returned an interception 40 yards for a score and John Volkerding caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Tyrone Reece.
