SPRINGFIELD -- Cape Central's girls swim team qualified for today's state finals in five events in Friday's preliminaries at the Missouri Stat Swim Championships.
Grace Freeman led the way with a second-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle (25.10 seconds) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (54.08). Mary Beth Owen also qualified fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.63).
Owen and Freemen were also members of the 200-freestyle and 400-freestyle relay teams which qualified for the finals. Central finished fourth in the 400 (3:43.50) with Jean Maguire and Jennifer Freeze joining the pair. The same four swimmers qualified fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:43.50).

Class 2A state meet
JEFFERSON CITY -- Kelly's boys recorded seven points and the girls four after Friday's first day of competition at the state track and field meet.
Scott City's Amy O'Brien scored all four of Scott City's points, taking fifth place with a 5-2 high jump, after the first day of action. Jenny Riley was fifth in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:42.14.
The Hawks 4x800 team of Joe Livingston, Daniel Mothershead, C.O. Scheffer and Nathan King finished third in a time of 8:24.48 behind first-place Principia (8:12.12). Lucas Chote added the Hawks other point with a sixth-place finish in the 3200 meters (10:27.60).
In the high jump, Chaffee's Andy Proffer placed ninth by clearing six feet. Teammate Andy Oberman took 12th in the shot put with a throw of 43-3. Scott City's Becca Gowin was 16th in the girls 800 meters in a time of 2:33.20.
Scott City qualified its boys 4x100 and 4x200 teams for today's finals with fourth-place preliminary finishes.
